Arlington Town Meeting

01 May 2003

Musings, in no particular order...

  • I have to give Mr. Lyons credit for at least not reading the Affordable Housing Task Force report verbatim. He still read too much of it, though.
  • In the one counted vote we had, there were only 158 votes cast. In theory there should be 252 (12 times 21). And this was only the second session.
  • I'm not sure which is more annoying, a veteran TMM (at least three years, I believe) demanding to know why the text of Article 26 (Gibbs) didn't say which board the Gibbs was to be transferred to, when the vote printed two inches below it clearly stated it would be the Redevelopment Board (a number of TMMs around me were muttering "Just read the vote!" under their breaths), or that all the people assembled upfront were confused by his question and didn't immediately say "The Selectmen's recommended vote says the transfer is to the Redevelopment board." It was only Monday that the Moderator reminded everyone that articles are merely agenda items and are not voted on.
  • After much agonizing on the George White Home Rule Petition vote, I ultimately voted against it. I suppose the choice may have been made easier by the knowledge that it would probably pass notwithstanding. I am uncomfortable with the age bar, but I am even more uncomfortable with selective enforcement. Selective enforcement opens up all kinds of potential unfairness and, as illustrated by this vote, removes the pressure to do something about a bad law. I also find it hard to believe that such moves do not put pressure (even if only implicit) on the hiring authority.
  • I think TM may have set some sort of paper blizzard record. In seven years I do not recall seeing so many things on our seats. Though I did make my contribution to the tree-killing frenzy.
  • How much money did 250+ copies of the 14-page, glossy-ish paper, color pictures News Racks report end up costing -- and on an recommended vote that merely "encouraged" the committee to draw up plans? While I appreciate the effort that went into compiling the pictures (it was instructive), a one-page verbal report coupled with a slide show of those same pictures would have gotten the same point across and would probably have saved a few hundred dollars.
  • I have to agree with Mr. Dunn's take on Mr. McClennan last night. I too was put off by the tenor Mr. McClennan used.
